Delete Yelp Review

Need help deleting a Yelp review? Yeah, that rabbit hole is deeper than I expected the first time I went digging. Like, I thought it would be a quick “click and poof”; nope. Yelp’s got rules tighter than TSA. You’d have better luck convincing a toddler that broccoli tastes like candy.

So here’s the thing—I actually tried this for a local client of mine. Let’s call her Lisa. She runs this killer nail salon in LA, like five stars all day… until boom—one salty customer drops a 1-star bomb because she “waited too long for a walk-in.” Bruh. You didn’t even have an appointment. Anyway.

Lisa hits me up like: “Can you get that taken down?” And I’m thinking, sure, how bad can it be? Turns out, unless the review breaks Yelp’s very specific guidelines (think hate speech, threats, or obvious spam), you’re gonna be doing a lot of praying and not much deleting.

Here’s what actually can work:

🚫 Option 1: Flag It Like Your Life Depends On It

Yelp does let you report reviews for review removal. So I flagged the review from Lisa’s account and mine. (Apparently, the more people flag it, the better—but don’t spam or it’ll backfire.)

  • Go to the review
  • Click the three little dots (⋯)
  • Hit “Report review”
  • Choose your reason: it’s biased, irrelevant, violates content guidelines, etc.

Still—don’t expect magic. Yelp has moderators, but they’re like bouncers at a VIP club. If your report ain’t solid? You’re not getting in.

Oh, and I found this buried gem on Yelp’s official site: Yelp’s Content Guidelines – super strict and…kinda vague at the same time.

🧠 Weird loophole I discovered (sorta):

If you wrote the review and want it gone—easy win. Just log in, delete it yourself. But if someone else wrote it? Whole different game.

There’s this part in their FAQ where Yelp says they won’t take sides in factual disputes. Yeah. So even if you show receipts that the customer was wrong—they don’t care. I even called Yelp (yes, they have a number, but good luck getting past the robot overlords).

Also found this nugget from the FTC on fake reviews and removal: Federal Trade Commission – Truth-in-Advertising— basically says fake reviews = illegal. So if you can prove the review is made-up? That’s your only real shot.

⚠️ Do NOT… I repeat, DO NOT:

  • Pay someone on Fiverr to remove it (they’ll either ghost or fake-flag it with bots)
  • Respond emotionally on the review page (“You’re a liar!!!” = Yelp will NOT help you)
  • Offer the reviewer a refund if they take it down (Yelp considers that “review manipulation”)

Yeah, wild. You can actually get penalized for trying to fix it “too nicely.”

So what did we do for Lisa?

We buried it. Like a bad ex.

I helped her:

  • Get 20+ happy clients to post fresh reviews (all from different devices/IPs, no shady business)
  • Respond to the bad one in a calm, professional tone—not robotic. Something like, “Hi there, sorry you had a long wait. We’re walk-in friendly but always recommend appointments to avoid that.” Boom. Human. Calm. Done.
  • Optimized her Yelp profile with updated pics, services, and even a short behind-the-scenes video. (Totally helped boost her trust score.)

A month later? That 1-star review was pushed to page two, and she was back to 4.8 stars overall. Crisis over.

💬 Final Thought (if you made it this far, you’re a legend):

Deleting a Yelp review? Hard as hell unless it’s flat-out illegal. But managing your reputation on Yelp? Totally doable—with patience, receipts, and a little SEO-magic-in-disguise.

And if you’re ever tempted to scream into the Yelp void? Been there. Just remember: silence the review with better ones, not rage.

(Also, side note: if you’ve ever flagged your own review accidentally—same. No shame.)
